Last November I finally made it down into the Paris catacombs! They’re one of the only ‘must-see’ sights that had been missing from my list of Parisan adventures.
My good friend Kin and I ventured down the 130 steps of their spiral staircase to arrive, dizzy, under the cobblestones and cafés of La Ville-Lumière. We walked through the tunnel system, which was initially created for mining limestone. We walked along the passageways mentioned in Les Misérables, by chambers where 19th century Monachists had been killed, and through tunnels used by members of the French Resistance during World War II. We walked along until we reached the 18th century sign that read “ARRêTE! C’EST ICI L’EMPIRE DE LA MORT” Once past we were greeted by the bones of approximately 6 million people. A staggering sight. Surprisingly, it wasn’t as creepy as I had thought it was going to be. It was just fascinating. I definitely recommend checking it out if you’re ever in Paris.
These days I’ve really been enjoying this post’s tune. I’ve been home alone, which means a lot of music blaring and a lot of kitchen dancing. This song has been playing on repeat. Ha! I just looked the band up and it turns out they’re based out of Montreal, and originally from France! Whaddyaknow.
