We Know The Moves

September 22, 2014 by ebembo

The West Block, Parliament Hill, Ottawa – Scheduled to reopen in 2017 Having each calendar year begin on a seemingly arbitrary day smack in the middle of the winter – just another cold day, undistinguishable from the cold days that preceded it – always struck me as an odd way to start fresh. If I had my way, I would have advised Pope Gregory to start every year in September. What better way to begin anew than during the most dramatic […]

Osheaga Wish List

August 4, 2014 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Festival-goers waiting for the headliner acts on the main stages I’ve been sick for over a week now. Runny nose, headache, sore throat, hacking cough: sick. My voice swings from sounding like a suffocating chipmunk to Beast (à  la ‘Beauty and the’), if Beast smoked 4 packs a day. I’m doing everything right: resting, drinking hot lemon water and honey, eating well, taking vitamins, going for short walks…. nada. The Beast is here to stay. However, after a weekend of […]

Osheaga Playlist 2014

March 11, 2014 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Three fans mourn the end of Metric’s set while The Black Keys rock out 50ft to their left. As Canadians outside Montreal are becoming increasingly aware, for the August long-weekend there is nowhere else to be but Parc Jean-Drapeau. Starting the year before I moved to Montreal in 2006, the Osheaga Festival Musique et Arts has really exploded in the last few years, reaching 135,000 attendees in 2013 (apparently 70% from outside Québec)- practically busting out into the Saint Lawrence […]

The Tree of Love

March 4, 2014 by ebembo

“I just really like my own company. And wine.” Before I get to the brilliant mind behind that quote, some backstory… I live across the street from an elementary school. On Valentine’s Day they strung up these red cardboard hearts all over the trees in the playground. They’ve left the hearts up for three weeks now, and I love gazing out my office window at them, fluttering in the breeze, weathering the snow, the freezing rain, the fierce winds, and […]

A little thunder’s good

December 9, 2013 by ebembo

In movies and TV shows, there is a trope that, if properly executed, can be utterly charming, and if poorly handled, can be the most grating thing in the world, and that is the oft-used character of the Wise Beyond Her Years Child. In the movie 500 Days of Summer, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character seeks life advice from his kid sister, played by a pre-teen Chloë Grace Moretz, as she waxes philosophical from the sidelines of her soccer game. At first, […]

Let Your Mind Wander & Your Heart Soar

November 4, 2013 by ebembo

The Guggenheim Museum, New York City (My thanks to Vappz for giving me the opportunity to write another guest blog.) Many months ago, I was overwhelmed with school assignments and exams. Despite needing to spend every waking moment writing, researching, and studying, I kept finding myself staring off into space, daydreaming. The reason behind these lost moments? I had gone to a concert and exchanged Meaningful Eye Contact (TM) with a bassist. I knew it was silly to keep thinking […]

Writing a Life of the Stars

October 15, 2013 by ebembo

New York Public Library’s Rose Reading Room Ah, Spencer Krug. In his latest incarnation as a solo artist, he goes by Moonface. It seems you can’t mention Spencer Krug without touching on his former bands, the most prominent of which was Wolf Parade. Full disclosure: I think their first album, Apologies to the Queen Mary, is a masterpiece and, not to get too High Fidelity here, is one of my top five albums of all time. Needless to say, I […]

Close to the Cold Coast

September 23, 2013 by ebembo

I’m very excited to be Snapshots & Needle Drops’ first guest blogger! Many thanks to Vappz, who is currently driving somewhere along the Australian coast, about to embark on a springtime fruit-picking adventure. Right now Montreal is experiencing that wonderful brief window when you wake up in the fall, spend your day in the summer, and go to bed in the fall again. It’s beautiful and warm, but there’s a certain crispness in the air. People are going out of […]

Osh-itimmissing-eaga 2013

Osheaga 2013 is less than two weeks away. That, along with missing Just for Laughs, Jazz Fest, the new food trucks (street meat!!) and hikes up to Mile End for St Viateur bagels is enough to make anyone severely nostalgic for Montreal summer days and nights. Fortunately, I am very happy in my Australian life and will only feel slight pangs of jealousy when you all start increasingly posting about this epic indie festival. Like previous years, Osheaga 2013 features […]
