“We are Stars and so are you”
I loved them when I was 14 and I love them now. The band Stars are Montreal legends. It has become tradition that, every autumn, the lovely Ms. GB and I attend a Stars concert in the fabulous city that both we and the band calls home. Sadly, my bestie and I are parted at the moment, but I was fortunate enough to be asked by another stellar individual to go to a free Mother Mother and Stars concert organized […]

Because Kate Nash Said…
This morning a message from one of my favourite singers, Kate Nash, popped up on my facebook feed. It urged me (and I suppose the rest of the ‘like’ Kate Nash community) to go buy the newest Peggy Sue album, Acrobats. I didn’t- but I did check them out. They’re a pretty cool band from Brighton, UK. I’ve embedded my favourite, but there are also some really great ones of them doing street-side performances in a few cities. The video […]

Flexx
Last Tuesday night I had the pleasure of attending an incredible dance show, Flexx, as a part of Divers/Cité Montreal (thank you Mr. Director!) Musically, they primarily used a beautiful, thin orchestral score except for one well-placed Cat Power song. I immediately knew I would use it for snapshots. However, the only pic I wanted to match it with was this breathtaking shot of Britt Lavigne. This lovely lady and I used to dance together on a competitive hip hop team […]

London Calling
Continuing with bands playing at Osheaga this coming weekend, we have The Sounds. Music imports from Sweden tend to fall into one of two categories: heavy death metal or lively, colourful pop. The Sounds fall under this second grouping and provide exactly the type of fun music we’ve come to expect from this country and their artists: artists like Robyn, Miike Snow, Peter Bjorn and John, Caesars, Teddybears, The Hives, I’m from Barcelona, Ace of Base and, of course, the […]

Nine Types of Light
Huzzah for sunglasses as makeshift filters! Last week I spent some quality time in my radio station’s library. My wonderful DJ partner and I were in this musical paradise into the early hours of the morning. We went through a bunch of the new promo CDs we’d received over the past three months… um… yes: Jackpot. I had already heard and liked the new TV on the Radio single Will Do, so I gave the album a listen and discovered that […]

Signing the Brothers
Early last month I posted a track by unsigned Montreal band the Barr Brothers: Beggar in the Morning. Out of the forty some-odd snapshots and needle drops posts to date, this track received by far the most positive feedback. Just praise, it’s fantastic. Well… Exciting news fans! The Barr Brothers have been signed!! Secret City Records have added them to their lineup alongside fellow Montreal artist Patrick Watson (who I featured in my very first post). This means quality studio time and… a […]

Mother, May I?
So far I’ve avoided listing a song by the same band twice, but yesterday I attended a free Mother Mother concert at the Apple Store in downtown Montreal (I know!) It was fantastic and deserving of a post. As I lined up alongside fellow music hipsters/snobs, cars on the street and passerbys stopped to ask “what’s the new gadget?” Our response that it was a concert upstairs by a group called ‘Mother Mother’ only served to increase their looks of confusion. I’d […]
