Man stands alone on beach, Kangaroo Island, South Australia

Sam Smith, so hot right now

May 26, 2014 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Secret beach at Stokes Bay, Kangaroo Island, South Australia Ah! I’ve been meaning to write about Sam Smith for the past couple of months, but I’ve been humming and hawing about his high level of notoriety– yes… I am a music blogging snob, and?… But then, I had the same internal debate last August with sharing Lorde– and it turns out she was still pretty under the radar. Once again, like I mentioned in the RAC post from last month, […]

“To drain the whole sea…”

March 24, 2014 by snapshotsandneedledrops

There is something about this song. Singer Andrew Hozier-Byrne’s voice starts out like red wine, rich and full bodied, luring us in with sounds that echo the sentiment of a Mississippi funeral procession. The smooth yet solemn funeral tone rips open to one like open grieving. Hozier’s climatic passion breaks his smooth velvet voice into hoarse sandpaper. Hozier could be someone to watch in 2014. So far, this single has reached number 2 in his native Ireland, and reached 19 […]

Treasure Hunting

March 17, 2014 by snapshotsandneedledrops

The Remarkable Rocks, Kangaroo Island, South Australia A few weeks ago, I wrote briefly about a trip my friend Matt and I took to Kangaroo Island. Matt and I make the perfect travel companions. We’re relaxed, adventurous, spontaneous, and we like climb all over shit. One big hangup we had about visiting Kangaroo Island is that most people do it in a day or two. A DAY OR TWO??! We had a full week there and felt like we had […]

Sydney night reflections

Slow Blow

December 4, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Sydney reflections Sorry guys and gals, Snapshots and Needle Drops has been taking a brief and unintentional hiatus. Fortunately, I’ve been taking loads of Snapshots-worthy pics and Emily is on deck waiting to publish another stellar post next week. The photo above was taken the night I ran Sydney’s City2Surf. To read about my amazing time in that that epic race, click here. Wolf Alice is a relatively new north-London band who released their debut EP this past October. This song […]

On the Road

October 21, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

A secret beach. Tunnel access only. “There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep on rolling under the stars.” – Jack Kerouac, On the Road Well, I’ve done it again. I’ve turned my life upside down and am now living on a farm in rural South Australia. Just over a month ago I hopped a flight from Canberra to Adelaide with the intention of going orange picking. Intentions are all well and good, but the best laid schemes […]

Running down to the riptide

May 27, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Stockton Beach, Worimi Conservation Lands, NSW, Australia It’s another Australian homegrown act for you this week with Melbourne artist Vance Joy. It has been a crazy roller-coaster hectic kinda weekend, but I still managed to listen to this track about 30 times in the last 72 hours. An instant favourite. I hope all you Canadians are enjoying the end of your Victoria Day. Very upset that I missed my day, but heartened to hear you found a way to soldier […]

In the Sticks

September 17, 2012 by snapshotsandneedledrops

I tend to have unrealistic expectations when a favourite band comes out with a new album. I’m always expecting to hear something that I both immediately love and is a big step away from their previous stuff. These things are rarely ever compatible. Fortunately, as these artists have already won my favour I stick it out for a few rounds on “repeat all.” For Mother Mother’s newest The Sticks, which is set to release tomorrow, it only took one additional listen before I […]

My Little Monster

February 14, 2012 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Happy Valentine’s Day! February 14th is special for another reason however, it’s the birthday of the little monster above, Wattie. It was nearly eleven years ago now that we found a ten-month old her on Wattie Road. She’s the best pup in the world. I adored this song from first listen. The last time I remember being immediately excited about a new song or band was the first time I heard Mumford and Sons. Which suits, as this band, Of […]

Into the Wild

January 20, 2012 by snapshotsandneedledrops

I was recently commiserating with my good friend Taylor about applications; on her end: law school, on mine: employment. “Eff law school imma go live in the woods!” she tells me. This naturally prompted me to compare her to Emile Hirsch in “Into the Wild.” As recent graduates, Taylor and I can sympathize with his character in the film. We are certainly feeling the post-convocation-must-find-role-in-life stress. The job market is a fearsome place, which is why this song is appropriate. The photo […]
