Running down to the riptide

May 27, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Stockton Beach, Worimi Conservation Lands, NSW, Australia It’s another Australian homegrown act for you this week with Melbourne artist Vance Joy. It has been a crazy roller-coaster hectic kinda weekend, but I still managed to listen to this track about 30 times in the last 72 hours. An instant favourite. I hope all you Canadians are enjoying the end of your Victoria Day. Very upset that I missed my day, but heartened to hear you found a way to soldier […]

That Expectedly, Unexpected Sound

April 15, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

The stunning ST a ‘Sparkling Hour‘ in Muskoka Dulling the pain created by the release of Osheaga’s 2013 line-up and the acceptance that I won’t be attending this year is the anticipation of going to the Australian music festival called ‘Groovin the Moo” in two weeks! Groovin’ the Moo has stacked the deck with awesome bands from Australia. And Australia, if you haven’t noticed, has recently been flooding the market with killer new acts. Today’s feature is a band that […]

Ain’t No Love

March 11, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Canberra’s ‘Enlighten’ Festival March 2013 I woke this fine Australian morning to find that my friends at Ain’t No Love have come out with a beast of a new video for their latest ‘Gone Already.’ It opens with haunting beats and singer Saidah’s entrancing vocals. The mix lures you into a chilled rhythmic groove only to be shaken awake by the purposely frantic and silver-tongued stylings MCs Beanz and 1990. Love Thy Brother’s Liam Clarke is masterful as he creates […]

Dancing in the Dark

February 5, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Some of my first memories involve my matinee performances of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Showcased daily from our living room. I adored that soundtrack. I would clear off all the laundry from a wooden chest behind the couch, climb up, dance and sing out all the lyrics– including the twenty-nine shades, repeated twice so it sounds endless, listed in his “coat of many colours.” If I really wanted to pull out a particularly show-stopping performance I would wear […]

The Clock that Mocks

January 28, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

“Time goes, you say? Ah, no! alas, time stays, we go.” – Henry Austin Dobson Looking out through the clock at the Musée D’Orsay, best museum in the world, at Paris’ 1st Arrondissement and on towards Sacré-Cœur. Time is making a fool of my plans. I cannot believe it’s Monday/post-day already! It’s been Australia Day celebrations-this and sightseeing-that… Anyway I was a bit under-prepared for this week’s entry so you’re getting some standby favourites. The photo was taken from inside […]

Walk Off the Earth

January 21, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Playing around the installations in the Sculpture Garden of the National Gallery of Australia. Walk Off the Earth is a Canadian group that gained viral notoriety from their amazing cover of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” performed with their five members playing on one guitar. Which at the moment has nearly 145,000,000 views on YouTube. Indeed the band does outstanding covers of many artists. A couple weeks ago I featured them on the Snapshots and Needle Drops’ Facebook Page […]

Top 10 songs from 2012

Top of the Drops 2012

December 30, 2012 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Music and I got off to a rocky start in 2012. Most of the new releases from early 2012 left me underwhelmed. Everyone seemed to be wrapped up in a big electro-techno wave that I was not whole-heartedly on board for. While I see these genres as great platforms for creativity and modernity, the majority of it does little to captivate me. This disheartened attitude took a turn for the better in the summer when I started discovering amazing new […]

Five Times the Charm

December 6, 2012 by snapshotsandneedledrops

It was a red lipstick type of night at the Kool Haus last Saturday. I met up the fabulous Bodi sisters in Toronto where we started the evening off right with some pizza and merlot. After donning the aforementioned red lipstick and Miss. A artfully splashed some smoke across my eyelids, we jumped in the cab to see Mother Mother! And then…. traffic. Incredible, incredible amounts of traffic. As we pasted the SkyDome (re: Rogers Centre) our cab driver said something about […]

The Mumford Effect

September 24, 2012 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Three days ago Mumford and Sons released their much-anticipated second album, Babel. Okay, here’s the thing: I haven’t actually listened to it yet apart from the single “I Will Wait” and the leaked tunes from a few months ago. So… I kinda dropped the ball on that one. From what I can remember though, the songs followed the Mumford standard: start slow- then, with rustic fervour, get faster and faster and faster. Really though, you’ve got nothing to worry, it’ll just more of […]
