Merry Happy

August 26, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Lavender lattes with Nams makes me merry happy. In two years of music blogging, I cannot believe I have not shared a Kate Nash tune. I often go months without listening to Kate, only to stumble across one of her gems and want to listen to nothing but this fiery Londoner for the next week. I might not have featured her, but Kate Nash did inspire the post “Because Kate Nash Said…” when she, personally (through her facebook fan page), […]

Running Royals: City2Surf 2013

August 12, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Just me and 84,999 of the world’s other coolest people. City2Surf! City2Surf! This weekend was City2Surf! This event, the world’s largest timed race, takes its runners from the heart of Sydney to Bondi Beach: 85,000 participants, 14 kilometers and a whole lot of amazing and hilarious sights in between. Favourite moments include the plentiful costumes, KISS tribute band, kids screaming you on, impromptu YMCA jog-dancing, stunning views of Sydney harbour at the top of “Heartbreak Hill” and soaring across that […]

Waves at sunrise, Tulum Mexico

Dreams of Cannibalism, Waves of Sound

July 29, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Dawn in Tulum, Mexico I like this week’s tune for it’s rolling waves of sound in the intro. It’s like the Japanese tetris version of Phil Spector’s “wall of sound.” “Dreams of Cannibalism” by Typhoon And for those of you who need some Osheaga love in your lives, remember to check out the Osheaga 2013 playlist!

Looking up at a Banyan tree, Mexico

The ‘Yes’ Feeling

July 15, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Eating breakfast under the Banyan trees in Tulum, Mexico The ‘Yes’ Feeling. The ‘Yes’ Feeling is when, on first listen, you grin like a fool. The ‘Yes’ Feeling is a new song on your itunes. The ‘Yes’ Feeling makes your day. The ‘Yes’ Feeling makes tireless music hunting worthwhile. I stumbled across this tune while searching through my music bookmarks tonight. I had never heard of Bear Mountain before. I extracted two important facts from their facebook page: They […]

Gold maple leaf on pavement

Canadian Gold

July 1, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA! I spent this Canada Day’s eve as a happy little ex-pat: baking maple cookies, wearing red flannel and unabashedly, albeit ironically, belting out Sloan lyrics– “One thing I know about the rest of my life… I KNOW THAT I’LL BE LIVING IT IN CANADA”.  And, while I imagined you all drinking beer on the dock and enjoying your day off, I was toiling away at my desk– not-so-secretly sporting a CANUCK tshirt under my blazer. Classic Canadiana: […]

Gold fleur-de-lis gates at the jardin tuileries, Place de la concorde, Paris, sun flare

White, Gold, Wild

June 25, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Looking out through the gates of Jardins des Tuileries towards Place de la Concorde, Paris The Montreal Jazz Fest starts this Friday, which makes me unbelievably jealous. That city is just the greatest place on earth in the summer. Jazz Fest is only the first in a long string of festivals of all my favourite things: music, art, music, comedy, music. Resulting in former-Montrealers to think of the City in wistful tones “Oh Montreal…” We use the same air of […]

Mashup Mania

June 17, 2013 by snapshotsandneedledrops

“I quote from others to better express myself.” – Michel de Montaigne With the emergence of digital sound technology, increasing connectivity and availability, sampling has become a constant in modern musical genres. The digital synthesizer and the internet have made conversations over music intellectual property a never-ending debate. I can certainly sympathize with the artist who wants to protect the originality of their work and ensure payment of royalties. However, there is a popular argument that rises every time some […]
