We Know The Moves

September 22, 2014 by ebembo

The West Block, Parliament Hill, Ottawa – Scheduled to reopen in 2017 Having each calendar year begin on a seemingly arbitrary day smack in the middle of the winter – just another cold day, undistinguishable from the cold days that preceded it – always struck me as an odd way to start fresh. If I had my way, I would have advised Pope Gregory to start every year in September. What better way to begin anew than during the most dramatic […]

Looking up at tree at night, Montreal

The Gloaming

June 5, 2014 by ebembo

I’m a big fan of Sofia Coppola. Her films are so atmospheric.  Her first feature-length film, The Virgin Suicides, has such a hazy aura; you can almost feel the humidity. What adds to the film’s uneasy ambience is the soundtrack by Air. When I see stills from the film, I can already hear the opening lonely piano notes of “Playground Love” in my mind. Virgin Suicides was one of the first films that made me realize that certain lasting images […]

Paris, 2am

April 29, 2014 by snapshotsandneedledrops

2am, Rue du Bac, 7e arrondissement de Paris I chose this photo because today’s song reminds me of some sort of chase scene through Europe– like it belongs on Jason Bourne’s running mix. This is undoubtably because it reminds me of “Running Away” by G. Love (embedded below) a great piece used in the movie Cellular. I’ve been running flat out for the last two weeks, so these tracks are fitting. I can finally see the light at the end […]

Osheaga Playlist 2014

March 11, 2014 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Three fans mourn the end of Metric’s set while The Black Keys rock out 50ft to their left. As Canadians outside Montreal are becoming increasingly aware, for the August long-weekend there is nowhere else to be but Parc Jean-Drapeau. Starting the year before I moved to Montreal in 2006, the Osheaga Festival Musique et Arts has really exploded in the last few years, reaching 135,000 attendees in 2013 (apparently 70% from outside Québec)- practically busting out into the Saint Lawrence […]

Olympic Rings in Whistler 2010

Blades of Gold

February 24, 2014 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Olympic Rings in Whistler for Vancouver 2010 Where were you when the puck dropped? On Sunday night at 11pm I was sitting on my couch, wine in hand- ready to chug the bottle if things turned blue and yellow. Obviously hockey is huge for us Canadians and the Olympics are a time when all the enormous talent we rent out to every American NHL team (seriously, 53.3% of players are Canadian with Americans contributing only 23.9% of their own homegrown […]

Tickle Me Pink: Color Run Canberra

Tickle Me Pink: Color Run Canberra

February 18, 2014 by snapshotsandneedledrops

The Color Run Canberra On Sunday I was FINALLY in the same place as a Color Run. That’s the trouble with all this traveling around- I’m never in one spot long enough to wait for these things to come around. Fortunately, I knew I’d be returning to Canberra for the pleasure of having coloured cornstarch hurled at me. The Color Run has long been a bucket list item for me. It was my first real motivation for being able to […]

The Whole Wide World is Whistling

January 14, 2014 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Kingscote Pier, Kangaroo Island, South Australia One of the absolute greatest weeks of this fabulous past year was the time I spent on Kangaroo Island with my friend Matt. Our days were jam-packed with adventure and our stupid, incredibly nerdy, humour. I took this photo within our first hour of arriving. We drove straight to the pier at sunset, walked right up to some pelicans, took a few pics, spotted a stingray, had beers with this fisherman and played with […]

Top Drops 2013

January 7, 2014 by snapshotsandneedledrops

As promised in last week’s Top Shots 2013, I have painstakingly culled my precious music selections from the past year and whittled down a top ten list for 2013’s Needle Drops. It was no simple task. I hummed and hawed, listened and relistened, made lists and reversed them and eventually came up with the following. Am I obsessive? Probably. Did I put too much time into this? Most likely. Am I happy with the results? Yes… I think so… Yeah…………. […]

The Nature of a Renaissance Girl

September 30, 2013 by ebembo

It is my pleasure to be back with yet another SS&ND guest blog! Oh Land’s “Renaissance Girls” is like an updated version of No Doubt’s “Just a Girl”; a 21st century tongue-in-cheek take on femininity – short bangs and all! If the mid-90s were about ironically playing on the “dumb blonde” stereotype (in addition to Gwen Stefani, we had Buffy and Cher Horowitz , to name a few), the 2010s have been about addressing the expectation that girls be all things […]
