Bird's eye view of fish and fishbowl, pink

“What’s your fish problem?”

October 15, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Last weekend, for Thanksgiving, both my brother and I went home for some family-turkey-time. The bro was even kind enough to swing by the airport to pick me up during his three hour drive north from his university. We’re home for maybe five minutes when this conversation transpired: Mom – Did you remember to unplug everything and close the house? Brother – yes, Mom. Mom – Where’s the fish? Brother – ……..oooooh no. Mom – You didn’t!? ……………… ………………….. ………………………. […]

Gaia by Guy Liberté, photos from space in Montreal's Place des Arts

Commuting Home

October 2, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

So when you commute home from your job at 6:30am, do you get to bike through beautiful aerial shots? At the moment Montreal’s Promenade des Artistes is adorned with sixty spectacular photographs of earth and its waterways. They were taken by space tourist Guy Laliberté, founder of Cirque du Soleil, during his 2009 trip to the International Space Station. The images can also be found in his coffee table book Gaia. Proceeds from Gaia go towards his One Drop Foundation which supports […]

Out With the Old

August 8, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

This beauty was waiting for me by the staircase to my apartment. I’m a big fan. You can’t really tell from the photo, but this mama is huge. Probably about 30cm wide- pretty big for the urban jungle. I thought I’d follow up yesterday’s super sombre post with a super jubilant one. I especially feel this song is apt as this is my first post from my brand… new… computer! Woot! This baby allows me to open iTunes and iPhoto […]

Signing the Brothers

July 20, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Early last month I posted a track by unsigned Montreal band the Barr Brothers: Beggar in the Morning. Out of the forty some-odd snapshots and needle drops posts to date, this track received by far the most positive feedback. Just praise, it’s fantastic. Well… Exciting news fans! The Barr Brothers have been signed!! Secret City Records have added them to their lineup alongside fellow Montreal artist Patrick Watson (who I featured in my very first post). This means quality studio time and… a […]

Wine Tasting in Môtiers

June 25, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Môtiers is a sweet little town in the Val-de-Travers district, in the canton of Neuchâtel, in the country of Switzerland. Val-de-Travers, besides having some magnificent hiking trails, is a region famous for being the birthplace of absinthe. Interestingly enough, the drink was banned in the country in 1908 after a factory worker killed his wife and children in an hallucinatory frenzy said to have been caused by the “green fairy.” The prohibition was not lifted until 2005. Fortunately, I moved to […]

There’s no need to convert a believer

June 20, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Bahamas aka Afie Jurvanen is a Torontonian artist. The tracks on his album Pink Strat are short and sweet- like the early Beatles stuff, with only three of the twelve songs reaching the three-minute mark. Bahamas has toured with other Canadian indie artists like Amy Milan, the Stills and Hayden. On the 24th he’s opening for Robert Plant & the Band of Joy on the first night of the Montreal Jazz Festival. He is great. The end. Already Yours by […]

À la prochain, les FrancoFolies

June 18, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

The last acts of this year’s Les FrancoFolies de Montréal are currently underway. This annual ten-day music festival features over a thousand french-language acts and Francophone performers from around the world. Like other music festivals in Montreal, there are hundreds of free outdoor shows around Place des Arts (in case you had questions about how awesome Montreal is, it is hundreds-of-free-concerts awesome). Feeling the FrancoFolies vibe, I’ve decided to feature Canadian bassist and singer Marie-Pierre Arthur. Elle by Marie-Pierre Arthur

Cathedral arches, St Paul's Basilique, Paris

He is… his daughter’s father.

June 17, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

I spent a long time trying to find a photo to match the song I had selected for today. I eventually decided on this one because the band, Fleet Foxes, often use incredible and layered vocal harmonies… they’re almost choral-like. As well, there’s this reverb quality to their sound almost as if they record in an empty cathedral. This week I was a very proud daughter. My dad was visiting for a couple days and we spent some time in HMV. […]
