Huzzah for sunglasses as makeshift filters! Last week I spent some quality time in my radio station’s library. My wonderful DJ partner and I were in this musical paradise into the early hours of the morning. We went through a bunch of the new promo CDs we’d received over the past three months… um… yes: Jackpot. I had already heard and liked the new TV on the Radio single Will Do, so I gave the album a listen and discovered that […]

The Love Shack is a little ole place where 100,000 people can get together. Last night my friends and I went to the closing concerts of the 2011 Montreal International Jazz Festival. On the main stage the B-52s were rocking it like it was 1989. The place was a mad house. Apparently by the time the 80s band graced the stage over 100,000 people had crowded into Place-des-Arts. After paying our respects to the B-52s by grooving to their tunes […]

The last acts of this year’s Les FrancoFolies de Montréal are currently underway. This annual ten-day music festival features over a thousand french-language acts and Francophone performers from around the world. Like other music festivals in Montreal, there are hundreds of free outdoor shows around Place des Arts (in case you had questions about how awesome Montreal is, it is hundreds-of-free-concerts awesome). Feeling the FrancoFolies vibe, I’ve decided to feature Canadian bassist and singer Marie-Pierre Arthur. Elle by Marie-Pierre Arthur

One of my favourite photos of one of my favourite people deserved to be paired with one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite bands. Pairings with The Temper Trap might just keep happening… they’re just so stellar. I saw them last fall when they came to Montréal the onstage sound these guys have is incredible. This pic came in second in a photography competition, the one that came in first I used for my first entry. Sweet Disposition […]

Good Morning! The song is Lemonade by Braids. Although they are now in Montreal, so a couple of their members could attend McGill, Braids got started in their high school in Calgary. I wish I was that cool in high school. My ‘band’ was a 40 person choir ensemble that seemed to sing most of our stuff in Latin or Swahili. I also happened to be the president of it… so yeah, I guess you could say I was pretty cool. Lemonade by […]

I took this photo a few hours ago and couldn’t resist sharing. I love Montreal. I love that on my walk home from work I pass by people like this cellist. The cello also just happens to be my favourite instrument. When I took this photo he had just started playing the very recognizable prelude from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suite no. 1. If you haven’t heard the piece, it might still seem familiar to you as there are a […]

Yesterday I went a little more public with this blog than I had before. The response was overwhelming. The stats on this page skyrocketed. Thank you all so much for your kind words of feedback, you guys are all kinds of awesome, particularly NA, MH and BB… Aces. Today I wanted to share a song by the Montreal band The Barr Brothers. I like Beggar in the Morning because of its simplicity. Consequently, I’ve chosen a simple photo. I don’t want to […]

All dressed up with somewhere to go. I’m sitting here writing this blog entry in a new dress, hair done and make up on, while my dinner companions are stuck in traffic, presumably staring at the clock and counting down the now 9 minutes we have to make our reservation. I was restless for twenty minutes waiting until I decided to stop and be productive. I felt awful in that “running to stand still” feeling, but it made me think […]
