Signing the Brothers

July 20, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Early last month I posted a track by unsigned Montreal band the Barr Brothers: Beggar in the Morning. Out of the forty some-odd snapshots and needle drops posts to date, this track received by far the most positive feedback. Just praise, it’s fantastic. Well… Exciting news fans! The Barr Brothers have been signed!! Secret City Records have added them to their lineup alongside fellow Montreal artist Patrick Watson (who I featured in my very first post). This means quality studio time and… a […]

Mother Mother Concert in Mac store July 2011, Molly Guldemond

Mother, May I?

July 19, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

So far I’ve avoided listing a song by the same band twice, but yesterday I attended a free Mother Mother concert at the Apple Store in downtown Montreal (I know!) It was fantastic and deserving of a post. As I lined up alongside fellow music hipsters/snobs, cars on the street and passerbys stopped to ask “what’s the new gadget?” Our response that it was a concert upstairs by a group called ‘Mother Mother’ only served to increase their looks of confusion. I’d […]

…And We’re Back

July 16, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Eek guys and gals, I know it’s been a post-less week, but it’s been busy times. Even now I barely have time to get this off… but I’ve been thinking of you, have you been thinking of me? This photo was taken from my backyard back home. If you like the song, it’s free this week on Canadian iTunes… although I never know when their Single of the Week actually starts and ends- so get on it. Also Montrealers! Mother […]

Farewell Royals

July 9, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

The Royal couple have officially (because everything they do is official) left Canada and arrived in Los Angeles. Consequently, I’ve been inspired to share this song with you all by U.S. Royalty. The photo matches the lyrics. It was taken on the descent after a gruelling hike up the Swiss Alps in Grindelwald. The views were more than worth it though. Equestrian by U.S. Royalty. While you’re at it, check out Voice Memo by U.S. Royalty as well:

“To live will be an awfully great adventure.”

July 7, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

My favourite classic novel of all time is J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. The book is so worth reading. Congratulations to ST who knew what song was played in the post Water Focus. It was a piece by Hans Zimmer called Time composed for the film Inception. This song is another piece composed specifically for images, but this time I won’t make you guess. It’s a cute/short/soft little number written for the show Community. Ironically, the episode it was was used […]

Black and white bare tree at Hyde Park, London

One Month

July 6, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Hyde Park trees, London Huzzah! A month ago I went public with this blog and now I’ve had over a thousand hits…. I’m pretty sure only about half of those could have been my mother. Thank you all for checking out my stuff! Your feedback makes me ridiculously happy. Guess who figured out how to embed a youtube video without the video?! Truthfully, it’s incredibly easy… computer code is so cool, you can do anything! Today’s selections were actually supposed […]

Closing Jazz Fest

July 5, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

The Love Shack is a little ole place where 100,000 people can get together. Last night my friends and I went to the closing concerts of the 2011 Montreal International Jazz Festival. On the main stage the B-52s were rocking it like it was 1989. The place was a mad house. Apparently by the time the 80s band graced the stage over 100,000 people had crowded into Place-des-Arts. After paying our respects to the B-52s by grooving to their tunes […]

Johnny

July 3, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Johnny Cash… This is going to take a while. In his long career he released 96 albums and 153 singles. His redemptive story is told through the film Walk the Line, but students of popular music come across the Man in Black repeatedly. There’s just so much to this man’s story and the people he affects. A couple years ago I attended an event featuring Bob Johnston, a record producer for Cash, as well as others like Bob Dylan, the Byrds, […]

Pushing Up Ottawan Tulips

July 1, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

HAPPY CANADA DAY!!! These tulips just happen to be in the gardens of the nation’s capital buildings. Just look at them as they patriotically ‘stand on guard for thee.’ My love for Florence + the Machine has recently been renewed. I listen to her album Lungs on my way to work, it makes for a lively and cheerful walk through the city. My Boy Builds Coffins is an upbeat, yet slightly macabre song, it suits the bright disposition of these tulips […]
