Looking through a snowy window at Montreal

“Worse than….”

November 23, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Last night I arrived home from my 10 day trip in Paris and Scotland. It turns out I was just in time! I woke up at 6:30 this morning to find it had been snowing all night. It’s a magical day, that first day of snow. The world is all of sudden a completely different landscape- granted it is a landscape you’ll be tired of in five months- but for now, coupled with the newly strung Christmas lights around the […]

Paris, je t’aime

November 15, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Fun fact: it is impossible to take a bad photo of Paris between the hours of 5pm and 7pm. This city is so freaking gorgeous. I should really just rename this blog “Paris Shots and Needle Drops” because that might be all get from me for awhile. I’m giving you some vintage Feist. This song was used on the Paris, je t’aime soundtrack- something I had not thought about when I titled this post. For those who haven’t checked out […]

Happy 90s Halloween

October 31, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

My close friends would be able to tell you that Halloween is not a favourite holiday of mine. Halloween was so much better in the 90s when I was a kid. The costume barely mattered because you had to put a coat on anyway and you got to run around your neighbourhood with friends getting candy. As an added bonus, I grew up in a small town, so every time my friends and I went to a house that we […]

“To live will be an awfully great adventure.”

July 7, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

My favourite classic novel of all time is J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. The book is so worth reading. Congratulations to ST who knew what song was played in the post Water Focus. It was a piece by Hans Zimmer called Time composed for the film Inception. This song is another piece composed specifically for images, but this time I won’t make you guess. It’s a cute/short/soft little number written for the show Community. Ironically, the episode it was was used […]

Water Focus

June 28, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

This composition was my favourite from last year. It grows agonizingly slow, is layered and heavy. It is epic. Warning though, if you’re in an impatient mood or too chipper… maybe hold off from listening to this piece until you’re alone in a dark room and just heard a dramatic story about a hero dying. Can you tell what film score it was composed for?

Wine Tasting in Môtiers

June 25, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

Môtiers is a sweet little town in the Val-de-Travers district, in the canton of Neuchâtel, in the country of Switzerland. Val-de-Travers, besides having some magnificent hiking trails, is a region famous for being the birthplace of absinthe. Interestingly enough, the drink was banned in the country in 1908 after a factory worker killed his wife and children in an hallucinatory frenzy said to have been caused by the “green fairy.” The prohibition was not lifted until 2005. Fortunately, I moved to […]

A Super Supergroup

June 22, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

I took this photo peering outside my hotel window in Florence. In all likelihood Mika’s Grace Kelly was probably playing in the background as MTV Italia was obsessed with the song at the time, and my roommates and I were obsessed with MTV Italia. Salute Your Solution is by the supergroup The Raconteurs. A supergroup is a band made up of individuals well known from other projects like Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young or Broken Social Scene. Apparently, The Raconteurs don’t consider […]

Que reste-t-il de nos amours?

June 11, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

It’s been a dreary day and my energy level has been at zero. I’ve selected an image and music to match. The song is the standard I Wish You Love. Originally written in French, the English version has been sung by greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Bassey, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, The Drifters, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Barbra Streisand… the list goes on and on and on. I like a relatively new recording; the Rachael Yamagata version was […]

Miles from Nowhere in the Centre of the World

May 30, 2011 by snapshotsandneedledrops

I took this last summer in Madison Square Park while visiting a friend in New York City. Funny story: spent the weekend, chatted with her roommate… a month later learned, just shortly after my subletting friend did, that said roommate was the child star who played Matilda. As a child of the 90s, I can tell you that this was mind-blowing. I recently watched the film, The Brothers Bloom, it’s quirky and sort of great. I also really loved the […]
